In her first Traditional Medicine session, Dr. Bloom will review the current epidemiology of TB and MDRTB. She will also discuss the strategies being used to decrease morbidity and mortality and the emergence of MDRTB, and explore technologies currently being developed to combat TB.

6:00 – 6:50 Travellers’ Health: The Dos and Don’ts – Dr. Tim Cook
Dr. Cook will review issues relevant to the health of travelers and discuss which travelers should be referred to a travel clinic. He will also review the evidence regarding new, traditional and complementary approaches to travellers’ diarrhea, and prevention of insect bites.

In this session, Dr. Cook will discuss the risk to physicians of exposure to certain biological agents via aerosols or blood and body fluids from patients. He will also review approaches to reducing this risk in day to day practice.

5:30 – 6:20 HIV and TB: Two Diseases, One Patient – Dr. Amy Bloom
In her third session, Dr. Bloom will review the geographic and epidemiologic distribution of TB and HIV and discuss the mutual impact of the two diseases. She will also explore the issues related to prevention and treatment in co-infected individuals.

8:45 – 9:35 The Real Hot Zone: Could it happen again? - Dr. Amy Bloom
In this session, Dr. Bloom will discuss the largest known outbreak of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever: etiology, epidemiology, treatment and outcome. She will also explain the methodology of an acute infectious outbreak investigation and discuss international surveillance efforts to identify and prevent the spread of Ebola.

In this session, Dr. Cook will discuss HOW conflict arises within the health care system and WHY each player’s motivation, training, and personality contributes to it. He will also provide practical methods to approach and resolve such conflict.

3:00 – 3:50 Antimicrobial Resistance and Drug Management - Is increased access to medication always beneficial? – Dr. Amy Bloom
Dr. Bloom will describe global trends that threaten the effectiveness of regimens and the major challenges in drug management, especially in times of rapid change. She will also review the programmatic implications of drug resistance.

In his last Complementary Medicine session, Dr. Cook will discuss what may differentiate alternative or holistic medicine from conventional practice and why patients seek one or the other. He will review the spectrum of health concepts and philosophies and discuss some ways to incorporate both practices of medicine.

Killed By Care; Making Medicine Safe - Jim Fulton
This session will feature a moderated discussion of the above-named one hour CBC Nature of Things 2004 documentary. Jim will present the video and follow up with a discussion regarding medical mistakes and how to make safety the issue not blame.
